The Distance Between Lights

At 4:17 in the morning, the city belonged to machines. Street sweepers moved slowly through the intersections, their amber lights turning against empty glass. Somewhere below, an elevator began its patient climb.

Mara was awake because the radio had spoken her name.

Not the small radio on the kitchen shelf. That one had been unplugged for three winters. The voice came through the receiver on her desk, below the soft static of a frequency that had been silent since she was a child.

She leaned closer. The dial did not move.
